Lawrence Rhu holds the William Joseph Todd Chair in the Italian Renaissance at the University of South Carolina, where he is a professor of English and Comparative Literature. He is currently a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Lisbon, where he taught under the same sponsorship in 2005. He has published two books, The Genesis of Tasso’s Narrative Theory (1993) and Stanley Cavell’s American Dream (2006), as well as numerous essays, articles, and reviews. He edited The Winter’s Tale in the Evans Shakespeare Editions (2011), and he is currently translating Il libro del cortegiano by Baldesar Castiglione for Hackett Publishing. His Tasso book includes translations of that poet’s theoretical writings most pertinent to his masterwork, Gerusalemme liberata.
