Abstract: This course aims at promoting the analysis and the debate on works of Science Fiction and Fantasy on literature and on screen. The sessions will explore relevant thematic perspectives concerning these fictional genres, and the way they serve as a metaphor for contemporaneity. This course is worth 1 ECTS, providing students attend classes and comply with online assignments.

*Adelaide Meira Serras is assistant Professor at the English Department of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, where she graduated in Germanic Philology, got her Master’s Degree in English Literature, and her PHD in English Culture, specialisation in eighteen-century English culture. She is a researcher at ULICES – English Culture Group. In that capacity she has edited and contributed with an article to Empire Building and Modernity, and translated Addison’s Cato, Catão, Uma Tragédia, introduction and notes. She co-directs the Science Fiction and Fantasy Project, Messengers from the Stars and edited and authored the introduction to Mensageiros das Estrelas. She currently teaches Medieval Culture, English Culture from the eighteen to the twenty-first century to her undergraduate classes, as well as postgraduate students’ seminars concerning gender studies, the British first empire and city studies. She has written several papers on British eighteen-century culture issues, such as the Enlightenment, the political and ideological paradigm, and the gender question. Now she is working on Enlightenment utopian writing.

*Ana Daniela Coelho is a researcher at the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES), in Research Group 1 – English Studies: Literature. She is also a member of Messengers from the Stars, an interdisciplinary group devoted to the study of science fiction and fantasy. She holds a degree in Modern Literatures and Languages, and she has recently concluded her MA, with a dissertation on film and television adaptations based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. She also collaborates in the Science Fiction and Fantasy classes at the Faculty of Letters.

*Ana Rita Martins is a lecturer at the University of Lisbon and a researcher at ULICES (RG 1). She holds a B.A. in English Studies and an M.A. in Medieval English Literature and she is currently working on her Ph.D. in Medieval Romance. Her main research interests include: Arthurian myth and legend, medievalism, fantasy and science fiction literature and their on screen adaptations.

*Angélica Varandas is an Auxiliar Professor in the Department of English Studies of the Faculty of Letters (University of Lisbon) where she teaches English Linguistics as well as Medieval Culture, Science Fiction and Fantasy. Her main area of research is English Medieval Literature and Culture, Science Fiction and Fantasy, in which she has published several articles. She is the author of two books about Celtic Mythology: Mitos e Lendas Celtas: Irlanda (Central Livros, Lisboa, 2006); Mitos e Lendas Celtas: País de Gales (Livros e Livros, Lisboa, 2007). Both were republished by Clássica Editora in 2012.

*José Duarte has a degree in Modern Languages – English Studies (FLUL) and a MA in North-American Studies (FLUL) on the TV series Six Feet Under. He is a researcher at ULICES (University Lisbon Centre for English Studies) where he won a grant. He is currently working on his PhD about American cinema, road movies, travelling and the city. He has several articles published, four books of poetry and two children’s books.

*Mónica Paiva has a degree in English and Spanish Studies in the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. Has concluded her master’s in English Studies in 2010 also in FLUL with the dissertation entitled “Melodrama on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown: A contrasting analysis between the Visual World of Douglas Sirk and its appropriation in Pedro Almodovar’s Cinema”. She is a researcher in CEAUL/ULISES in FLUL and works as an audiovisual translator and English teacher.

Invited Lecturers:

José Varandas is an Auxiliar Professor of History at the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon where he obtained his PhD (2005). Since 1980 he teaches History and Classic Culture, Medievla History of Portugal, History of Medieval Culture, among others. His mains areas of research include Medieval History, Militar History, Rural History, Navy History, History of Municipality and History of Institutions.

Iolanda de Brito e Zôrro has a Faculty of Letters University of Lisbon degree in “Languages, Literatures and Cultures – Anglo-American Studies”. She also has a Master’s degree on “Anglo-American Studies”, having written a thesis entitled “Harry Potter – The Diagon-al Path in the Quest for Truth”. She is a researcher at ULICES and has participated in several national and international conferences. Currently, she is teaching English at a primary school.
