ESC #43: Multimodal texts: graphs, advertisements and teaching

Abstract: This workshop on Multimodality aims to provide an introduction to a set of tools that make it possible to analyse texts that consist of different semiotic modes (e.g. written text, images, audio). The focus will be on the categories of the Grammar of Visual Design, developed by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen and put forward in their seminal work Reading Images (2006).

Bionotes:

António Avelar is Assistant Professor in Linguistics Department of the University of Lisbon, Department of Linguística Geral e Românica within the School of Arts and Humanities – University of Lisbon (FLUL). He is also teaching at the Portuguese Language and Culture Program (PFL), where he is the director of the PhD Program in Portuguese Language and Culture. He co-coordinates the Annual and Summer Courses of Portuguese as Foreign Language at the Portuguese Culture and Language Institute, FLUL. António Avelar has been a researcher in the Group 5 of University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, where he has participated in research on Multimodality. He organized the 1st International Conference From Language to Multimodality and participates in the Forum From Language to Multimodality, as well as in the workshops organized by the research group. | Ann Henshall has more than 25 years experience teaching English as a foreign or second language. She has worked in Portugal, France and Australia and is currently teaching English for specific purposes at Lisbon School of Economics, University of Lisbon. She has a PhD in Linguistics from the Faculty of Letters University of Lisbon and has been a researcher in Group 5 of University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, where he has actively participated in research on Multimodality and its dissemination, namely in the 1st International Conference of From Language to Multimodality and in the Forum From Language to Multimodality, as well as in workshops. | Maria Lima worked in the secondary school system for more than 10 years, teaching Portuguese both as a first and second language.teaches Portuguese as a foreign language. She currently teaches Portuguese as a foreign language at the Portuguese Language and Course Institute, Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon. She has a Masters in Portuguese as a foreign/second language, and her dissertation reflects on multimodal texts and their application in foreign language teaching. Since 2013 she has been a member of Group 5 in University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, where she has been involved in research on Multimodality and its dissemination, namely in the Forum From Language to Multimodality, as well as in workshops. | Miguel Moiteiro Marques has worked as a journalist in radio and the press. In the last ten years he has been involved in teaching Portuguese as a foreign language, working for the Camões Institute in Venezuela and Nigeria as well as for the Portuguese Language and Course Institute of the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon. Since 2012 he has been a member of Group 5 in University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, where he has actively participated in research on Multimodality and its dissemination, namely in the 1st International Conference of From Language to Multimodality and in the Forum From Language to Multimodality, as well as in workshops.
