SYCHOGEOGRAPHY AND CANADIAN LITERATURE CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP

This workshop will explore relationships with place and in particular emotional connections with landscapes. We will examine a variety of Canadian texts in which geographical location features prominently, drawing from Guy DeBord’s concepts of psychogeography whereby emotions and behaviours are affected by the geographical environment.

Following this literary and conceptual introduction to significant places, and to discussions in small groups, creative writing exercises, inspired by free fall writing as taught by the Canadian writer Barbara Turner Vessalago, will allow for a personal engagement with the subject of place and belonging. These exercises, while highly structured, will allow for free and open creative expression within a non-judgemental context.

Mary Fowke is a Gestalt Psychotherapist and a Ph.D student at the Faculty of Letters, Lisbon University. She has a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Toronto and an M.A. from La Sorbonne Nouvelle, University of Paris III. She is interested in bridging psychotherapy and literature and is particularly interested in forms of consciousness. She also writes creatively and is a member of the Lisbon Writers’ Circle, a monthly writing group.
