IndirecTrans 2

IndirecTrans 2

IndirecTrans 2 has been envisaged as a spin-off follow-up large-scale international project of the exploratory national project running between 2013 and 201) as ULICES RG6 IndirecTrans 1: Indirect Translations of English Literature Published in Portugal (1901–1950). The ultimate aim will be to foreground and explore the so far understudied concept(s) of indirectness in Translation Studies, and employ them in empirical research on translations. The project’s primary aims run as follows: (a) to give continuity to a new methodology for identification and analysis of (different degrees of) translation (in)directness; (b) to further the development of a typology for profiling indirect translations; (c) to compile, problematize and organize terminology regarding indirect translation (both in central and peripheral languages); (d) to relate the concept(s) of indirect translation with other (currently disparate) concepts (such as adaptation, censorship, exile, pseudotranslation, retranslation, self-translation, etc.). To achieve these goals, a series of case-studies based on various text types and language pairs will be developed. These studies will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of indirectness in cultural inter- change traditionally manifested in the choice of a (mediating) source-text and the role of (mediating) agents.
