English for Academic Purposes (EAP) – Academic Writing Skills

Dates
April 6 to June 1, 2018
42h (27 contact hours + 15 hours for preparatory reading and writing)
9 three-hour sessions (9 to 12 am), on Fridays.

Objectives
Identifying and applying an academic writing style; developing writing skills in English (structure, argumentation, coherence and cohesion); writing different types of scientific texts (review, abstract, paper, essay).

Syllabus
Module 1 – EAP: An Introduction
– dialogues in the academic community;
– style and register of academic English;
– specific grammar and syntax.

Module 2 – Reviews
– different types of review;
– structure, content, and language.

Module 3 – Abstracts
– structure and content (thesis, aims, key words);
– summarizing and synthetizing ideas.

Module 4 – Conference Papers
– pre-writing (planning, outline);
– structure (introduction, body, conclusion);
– while-writing: organization and coherence (layout, paragraph structure, topic sentences, linking words);
– presenting a paper.

Module 5 – Essays
– developing an argument;
– describing process, cause-effect and sequence;
– exemplifying and illustrating;
– comparing and contrasting;
– using sources (paraphrasing and quoting; reference styles);
– post-writing: proofreading (using checklists).

Teacher
Marta Soares holds a PhD in American Studies from the Faculty of Letters, University of Coimbra. She is currently a researcher at ULICES. She holds a BA in English and German Studies – Specialization in Education, having worked extensively as a teacher of English in the most diverse contexts, including Academic English. She is also an experienced translator and reviewer of academic texts (abstracts, papers, essays, and theses).

Participants
This course is directed at teachers/researchers and MA and PhD students who wish to strengthen their skills to write essays and other types of texts that circulate in the academic context. The participants should have at least a B2 level of English. If a language certificate is not available, a placement test will be taken before registering for the course.

Assessment
For assessment purposes, participation in sessions, based on the bibliography of the course, will be considered (20%), as well as two texts written by the participants: one selected amongst the models considered, with ca. 5 pages (30%) and an essay, with ca. 10 pages (50%).
Certificates:
The participants who wish to be assessed will receive a certificate mentioning their final grade.
