The University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies invites you to a tribute to the Irish poet and Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney (1939-2013), ‘a great poet who was also a great man,’ in R. F. Foster’s apt words. A Tribute to Seamus Heaney will consist of a lecture on ‘“I can connect’: relation and continuity in Seamus Heaney,” by Professor Rui Carvalho Homem, followed by a bilingual poetry reading by Mick Greer and Rui Carvalho Homem. It will take place on Friday, 22 November, from 2 p.m. till 3.30 p.m., at the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon, Lecture Room 2.13.
Rui Carvalho Homem is Professor of English at the Faculty of Letters, University of Porto. He has published widely on Early Modern English drama, Irish studies, translation, and word-and-image studies. He is also a literary translator, and has published versions of Shakespeare (Antony and Cleopatra and Love’s Labour’s Lost), Seamus Heaney and Philip Larkin. His latest monograph is Poetry and Translation in Northern Ireland: Dislocations in Contemporary Writing (Houndmills: Palgrave, 2009).
Mick Greer lectures at the English Department, Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon. He holds a PhD in Theatre Studies with a thesis on Theatrical Joyce, which brings together his twin interest in Irish literature and in the theatre. He also works as an actor and a translator.
