The lecture will be in English, with focus on various language families in India and their evolution. It will also deal with the current status of English in Indian society. Finally, the lecture will critically analyze the recent decision by the Government of India to declare some Indian languages as classical.
Professor J. Prabhakara Rao is Director of the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Hyderabad; studied M.A. (Integrated) in Philology and did Ph.D. in Linguistics from Russian State University (formerly Patice Lumumba People’s Friendship University), Moscow. His research areas are Computational and Mathematical Linguistics, Systemic Linguistics, Methodology of Linguistics, Translation Studies, Russian Linguistics, Russian as a Foreign Language.
