Overall description:

This project investigates the rising popularity of Science Fiction (SF) and Fantasy, examining how these genres reflect contemporary anxieties and social unrest. It highlights their role in fostering interdisciplinary discussions and their ability to address current societal concerns, promoting critical reflection. The research seeks to underscore the significance of SF and Fantasy in modern culture, particularly in how they engage with present-day fears and tensions. Despite their popularity, SF and Fantasy remain underexplored, making this study valuable for both academic and broader audiences. The project utilizes methodologies that include analyzing how these genres interact with contemporary issues, exploring creative works, and examining their production and reception. Key outcomes are expected to include international conferences, undergraduate courses, social and cultural initiatives, and the open-access peer-reviewed journal Messengers from the Stars: On Science Fiction and Fantasy. Milestones feature conferences, workshops, and creative activities, focusing on expanding collaborations with academia (Science and Technology Faculties) and civil society (such as schools, literary and film festivals, and other events), especially in marginalized communities. In 2019, the group submitted the following project for funding “Geographies of Science Fiction: Europe and the Future Imagination”, which was well-received but was not considered for funding.
